Claims starting point

How to start a VA disability claim.

This page gives safe first steps. It is not claims advice, and Vols4Vets does not file claims.

Fast answer: Start at VA.gov. If you want help, use a county veteran service office, VSO or other VA accredited representative. Check accreditation before sharing claim details.

Who this page is for

Veterans who are thinking about a disability claim and need to know the first official doors to check.

First three steps

  1. Write a plain list of conditions, service events, treatment places and questions.
  2. Gather records you already have, but do not send them to Vols4Vets.
  3. Use VA.gov or an accredited representative to learn the official claim process.

Official starting points

What to bring

DD214 if available, VA letters, service treatment records you already have, civilian records if requested by an official or accredited helper and a list of questions.

What not to send to Vols4Vets

Do not send claim numbers, medical records, DD214s, legal papers, passwords or private claim details. Vols4Vets cannot review or manage them.

What happens after this link
